Business with a Purpose

Big Brothers, Big Sisters

Members of the Strategic Influence Board (SIB) at BCBSTX partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star to provide 500 backpacks full of school supplies for Big Brothers, Big Sisters “Littles” and their siblings in the Dallas-Fort Worth and greater Houston areas for the 2013-2014 school year. BCBSTX was pleased to donate funding for this event, which attracted close to 100 volunteers.

Houston Food Bank

Last April, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) partnered with the Houston Food Bank and KIPP Explore Academy to deliver fresh produce to more than 700 Houston families. More than 100 BCBSTX employees coordinated with the Houston Food Bank to fill 1,500 grocery bags with fresh produce and delivered the bags to families in the ACE (Access, Continuity and Education) Program at KIPP Explore Academy. The Academy’s ACE program is a collaborative effort seeking to improve health by removing barriers to healthy eating.

Tarrant Area Food Bank

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) Major Accounts Council volunteered with Tarrant Area Food Bank in 2013, an organization dedicated to serving children who depend on free and reduced-cost school programs. The council’s volunteer event for this organization focused on the food bank’s “Backpacks for Kids” program, which provides nourishment on weekends for more than 2,000 students at high risk of hunger. More than 50 BCBSTX customers and executives stuffed 2,000 backpacks so children could take home food for themselves and their school-aged siblings at the end of the week.
