REAL School Gardens

BCBSTX was pleased to welcome a new community partner in 2013: REAL School Gardens (RSG), an organization that builds learning gardens in low-income schools in urban North Texas, helping kids establish a connection with healthy fresh food. The program includes training for teachers in how to use the outdoor classrooms/growing experience to boost student achievement in math, science and language arts

Food Bank Partners

A new facet of the HKHF program in 2013 includes teaming up with food banks across the state to provide access to food for kids in an effort to reduce food insecurity — the inability to consistently access nutritious and adequate amounts of food necessary for a healthy life. In 2013, BCBSTX partnered with 11 food banks:

  • Capital Area Food Bank of Texas,
  • Concho Valley Regional Food Bank of Texas,
  • El Pasoans Fighting Hunger,
  • Food Bank of Abilene,
  • Food Bank of The Rio Grande Valley,
  • Houston Food Bank,
  • North Texas Food Bank,
  • San Antonio Food Bank,
  • Tarrant Area Food Bank,
  • Wichita Falls Area Food Bank, and
  • Harris County Food Bank.
